Seven Reasons Why Community-based Workers Are Unsung Heroes

For over twenty-five years, I have served the community by working as a social-service provider. Throughout my career, I have seen things. Some things would take an insurmountable amount of mental toughness to shrug off, but some are tear-jerking, sob-inducing happy moments.

Social Service may not be the flashiest or highest paying job, but it certainly comes with some rewards that money can’t amount to. Though Social Workers play an integral part in creating a better community, they often go unnoticed and underappreciated.

The purpose of this article is not to romanticize the woes of my fellow social workers, but to let them know that they have to stand proud because they are heroes in their own right.

Seven Reasons Why Community-based Workers Are Unsung Heroes

They ensure the overall health and wellness of the next generation. Part of their job is to create a healthy environment and make sure that the community is conducive to the overall health of the youth.

  1. With all their might, they try to make sure the community has access to health care.

Although this is still an ongoing battle given the lack of budget, they still do what they can to provide better health care to people in the community.

  1. They stop violence from the grassroots.

Social workers cut off violence within the family so it does not escalate on a community level.

  1. They try to create a better future for everyone.

They plan out the future of the community on a long-term level. Though there is still a budget issue, they still do what they can.

  1. They make sure everyone gets a shot at second chances.

Social services do not just revolve around the community. They also help people who were previously incarcerated, get a chance to turn their life around.

  1. Though they hardly make ends meet with the way social workers are paid, they still offer their heart and full-time commitment in the name of social welfare.

They are straight-up selfless and no one can argue with that.

  1. They can turn a person’s life around with heartfelt empathy and genuine willingness to help.

When they help, they are not looking forward to anything in return. They just want to help because that’s what they are, real-life heroes.

Need I say more? Social Workers are unsung heroes and the community should appreciate them more.
